Now, This is a common misconception about hypnosis. Nobody can be hypnotised against their will. Hypnosis is not about control by the hypnotist. It is about working together so that the client can be empowered to create change in his or her life. Nobody can be forced to do anything against their will. The ‘control’ misconception appears to originate from stage hypnosis which funnily enough also involves people doing exactly what they want to be doing.

They know that they are going to be asked to do a lot of silly things and they agree to that at some level of their mind. If some one brought a participant from a stage hypnosis show to my office for some clinical purpose, they would not respond to any of the suggestions which they had responded to when they were in the entertainment setting nor would I do that from eithical and professional point of view.
The context in which the hypnosis is taking place in the clinical setting and the understood purpose of the hypnosis in the clients mind always determines the type of responses that can be elicited. You can not be caused to do anything in hypnosis that you would not ordinarily do in your ordinaty life. And, of course, in a clinical setting all suggestions would pertain precisely to the goal of you gaining more control in your life and accomplishing the changes you are seeking help for.

After 600 sessions of Psychotherapy, there was a mere 38% success rate. After only 22 sessions of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, there was a 72% success rate.
